In Francis’s free time, he hits the road in search of vintage menswear to unearth & add to his collection that is carefully curated under the name “Vonnegut Vintage” in Sacramento, CA.
In my free time, I hit the road in search of beautiful scenes to photograph, in hopes that I come away with work that challenges my perspective & stands the test of time.
With that being said, it only made sense that we’d eventually hit the road together.. blending both of our passions into one trip.
On one Sunday morning last month, that is exactly what we did. We got in the car & headed northbound on I-5. I was behind the wheel & he sat at the edge of the passenger seat: thoroughly surveying the open road in front of us; looking for any reason to make us get out of the car & explore.
“slow down for a second”
“turn here”
“maybe park up there”
Those were the few words Francis would say when I knew he had found something worth stopping for. It was thrilling to be in the same car as someone who was as attentive & drawn to details as I normally am when I take my solo drives. I knew that even if we didn’t find a whole lot of what we were both looking for, this drive was still something special..
After a little over 200 miles of zig-zagging the backroads in some of Northern California’s ghost-towns, we returned home with an added layer of friendship & a yearning for our next trip.
I like that line: "It was thrilling to be in the same car as someone who was as attentive & drawn to details as I normally am..."
Sounds like a wonderful trip and I love the atmosphere of your photos.
