Reading:
The Creative Act: A Way of Being by Rick Rubin has been the most important book of the year for me. I was drawn in by the simplicity of the cover and once I read the intro, I knew I needed to read it all. This book couldn’t have entered my life at a more perfect time as I am reminding myself how important it is to embrace every stage of the artistic process, even when it feels like I am at a stand-still with creating. Here are some excerpts that I find to be very inspiring:
To everything–
There is a season–
And a time to every purpose under heaven
A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep
A time to build up, a time to break down
A time to dance, a time to mourn
A time to cast away stones
A time to gather stones together –Pete Seeger (The Byrds)
“We tend to think of the artist’s work as the output.
The real work of the artist is a way of being in the world.”
“Deepening our connection to nature will serve our spirit, and what serves our spirit invariably serves our artistic output.”
Listening:
An earlier album by Chaz that brings me back to when I used to frequent the Bay Area for solo photo day trips..and it still serves as a beautiful start to my mornings:
I’ve been obsessing over this one. The funky monks are back in full force!! This album reminds me so much of the Mother’s Milk and BSSM era that my dad raised me on. So damn good..
Watching:
Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City. Do I need to explain why?? It was BRILLIANT and the color pallete was so beautiful. I look forward to rewatching this many, many times.
