I found myself asking this question in my head a few days ago:
Why don’t I share my current obsessions (since I tend to fixate a lot) with you on this newsletter from time to time? Maybe it’ll bring forth more inspiration for you as it does for me!
Reading:
Bryan Schutmaat’s Good Goddamn: “a short photobook about a man named Kris from rural Texas and his last few days of freedom before going to prison.” Bryan was kind enough to send me an imperfect copy (which was cheaper & seemed more fitting for this particular project of his) last month. I knew that once I had come across the digital version of this work that I just had to see it in a tangible, book form. Freedom is exemplified throughout the entirety of this book; through motion, the untamed landscape & of course.. through unconventional portraits of Kris himself. This is truly a beautiful project.
Benjamín Labatut’s When We Cease to Understand the World: “a book about the complicated links between scientific and mathematical discovery, madness, and destruction.” This book is not photo-related but damn does it let my mind picture the beautifully-detailed stories Benjamin writes about. Throughout the five stories of men whose inventions have ridden the thin line of genius & devastation, it’s even more intriguing when you realize that those stories become increasingly falsified. I’ve never read a book quite like this one; making me question what is real & what is made-up from page to page. I highly recommend this one if you are looking to change things up a bit. This will be a book I continue to revisit from time to time.
Listening:
These two albums have been on a constant repeat for me lately. I love the simplistic yet multi-layered lyricism as well as the blend of a softer indie rock sound that has some bits of angst thrown in between. They both feel so timeless in their own specific ways. They just feel good to me..
Watching:
This documentary on the making of Modest Mouse’s 1997 album is very intriguing; portraying a portrait of America & all of its beauty, ugliness & neglect.
I hope some of this has interested you. I’m not sure where & when I’ll post these “phixations” but I plan to keep this idea alive!
What have you been fixating on? Feel free to share below in the comments!
Love this idea for a series! I fixate on music all of the time but never really share that side of me on the internet anymore, maybe that should change!
Our talks made me realize that I should start doin this!! & you should too :-)
