On a recent Sunday, I got to enjoy one of my favorite pastimes: wandering aimlessly through the alleyways and quiet side streets of Midtown Sacramento. I couldn’t even tell you how many miles I’ve put in on this 30x30-street grid since moving here at the end of 2015.. but let’s just say it is surely a ridiculous amount, haha.
Since we moved out into a nearby suburban area back in October, I haven’t had the urge to dissect Midtown like I used to. I had gotten quite bored with it over the past few years; thinking there were no more “good” photos to make.
Luckily, to my surprise, on this 30-minute walk a few weeks ago, I happened to find quite a few “new” scenes that I had either overlooked or simply missed in those countless photo walks in the past. Perhaps the post-storm sunshine and cloud coverage had shined a new type of light on these little neglected corners..
Whatever it was, I was reminded during this walk that there is always something new/interesting to find in places we tend to mark off as “unworthy” or “boring”.
We’ve just gotta keep wandering and maybe we’ll get lucky!
In light of those long midtown walks, here are some of my favorite photographs made during the first few years of living there:
In a future issue, I will dive into one of the zines I made during this particular time in my life.
Stay tuned..
Interesting how the older shots have a different look to the newer ones. Are you shooting on film or is this an example of how our processing preferences often change over time? I know mine do! I'm finding myself re-processing a lot right now...
The ability to recognise old scenes in a new light is much underrated.
