I was flipping through Headed West by Paul McDonough the other morning and found myself chuckling at nearly every other photograph. I was reminded of what I love most about street photography.. and that is clever/comedic storytelling which is ultimately the result of being in the right place at the right time with a camera. As I made my way through the book, I couldn’t help but think that his work reminds me of a more polished version of Austin Leong’s work, who is a favorite contemporary street photographer of mine. Photography like this is a good reminder to always keep my camera on me and to keep my eyes open at all times. I don’t partake in much “street photography” nowadays but man, this kinda stuff is so damn inspiring to me.
Here are some favorites:
silly, made-up stories/captions by me:
Photograph #1: Boy and dog take wagon to shop for routine maintenance
Photograph #6: “Well what is it?” asked the person on the right of the mysterious black box on Ocean Beach. The person on the left replies: “I don’t know, man..don’t ask me. I just wish I didn’t get high before our beach walk.”
Photograph #9: Irony on the Interstate
